Sankofa Chronicles by Toyosi Saliu
Presented by Elitha’s Gallery — A Creative Initiative of NIAS
Elitha’s Gallery, the artistic branch of the National Institute of African Studies (NIAS), invites you to experience Sankofa Chronicles—a stirring exhibition by Nigerian artist Tóyọ̀sí Saliu.
Sankofa Chronicles is a powerful tribute to African royalty, Black beauty, and the reclamation of history. Saliu’s work embodies the spirit of Sankofa—honouring the past to shape the future. Blending realism with symbolism, her work explores memory, identity, and spiritual presence.
In Sankofa Chronicles, Tóyọ̀sí invites us to reflect, remember, and reclaim through visual storytelling that bridges the past with the present. Blending realism with symbolism, her pieces explore themes of memory, identity, spiritual presence, and the enduring strength of African heritage. Infused with 24-carat gold and adorned in traditional African attire, each painting becomes both a tribute and a reclaiming of ancestral legacy.
" Like gold buried deep beneath the earth, formed over thousands of years, and now shining with priceless value—Saliu’s work brings us back to the richness of African royalty, history, and culture."

For Collectors, Thinkers, Tastemakers
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to witness a new African visual language unfold—where gold leaf meets textured abstraction, and identity is rendered not as spectacle but as structure.
For the discerning collector, art is more than aesthetics—it’s an investment in an artist who reaches out to craft their own legacy. This Nigerian artist redefines legacy by painting with authentic 24-carat gold, creating works that are as rare as they are radiant. Each piece is a masterstroke of cultural pride and timeless craftsmanship, where gold is not just a medium, but a message: of resilience, royalty, and reverence.
Whether you’re a collector looking for tomorrow’s blue-chip artist, a consultant seeking visual clarity in complexity, a financier with a trained eye for long-term value—or simply a curious mind attuned to global conversations—Saliu’s work delivers on every level.
